"They arrived at the battlefield at dusk. The shooting was becoming more sporadic as it was difficult for soldiers to aim through the heavy smoke at twilight. The three of them picked up as many injured soldiers as they could and stacked them in the buckboard for transport back to the Old House. Furniture was moved out of the living room and the wounded were made as comfortable as possible on palettes on the floor.

When Sherman’s scouts came through, they declared the Old House to be a hospital. It seems that in the dark, poor Lucy was picking up Union soldiers as well as our Rebs, and once daylight hit, simple Christianity won out. We children were savage enough to be thrilled to have the bloodstains of that long ago time permanently embedded in the wooden floors."

sample recipes:

RASPBERRY ITALIAN ICE

1-Cup Raspberries
1 Cup Water
1/2 Teasp. Lemon juice
(for stronger flavor, you may add a dash of raspberry extract)
8 tbsp. of sugar

Mix all ingredients and freeze until slushy.  Serve at once or beat with mixer until fluffy and freeze again. Makes 2 servings.

DRIPLESS POPSICLES

1 (3 oz.) pkg. Jello,
1 Cup Sugar
1 pkg. Kool-Aid
2 Cups Boiling Water
2 Cups Cold Water

(I tried to get really creative here and love it – BUT the kids I experimented on liked their Kool-Aid and the Jello to be the same flavor<G>)  Dissolve Jello, Kool-Aid and Sugar in boiling water. Add cold water. Fill Popsicle molds 3/4 full. Freeze until solid.  (Small paper cups can be used – place sticks in when beginning to freeze or they will freeze at an angle.)
